Sam Zaldivar - 2011 Spotlight Ballet First Place

What was your experience like participating in Spotlight from auditions to master classes?
Spotlight was an incredible experience right from the start! Throughout the whole auditioning process you feel welcomed and cared for. Due to a conflicting performance schedule, I was unfortunately unable to take the master class, but my friends who attended told me it was an amazing class and I am sorry I missed it.

What was it like performing on the stage of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion?
Performing at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was unbelievably fun and probably, though hopefully not, a once in a lifetime experience. Hearing from my parents and family, about the amazing history of the Dorothy Chandler just added to the experience.

What is your favorite thing about performing or studying your art form?
My favorite part of studying ballet is that it combines athleticism with artistry. However, my favorite part of performing is how you can feel the energy levels of an audience and use it to continue fueling your performance.

Who is your favorite singer/dancer/performer/composer, etc. and why?
I am inspired by the careers of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rudolf Nureyev, Vladimir Malakhov, Ivan Vasiliev, and Carlos Acosta.

Who has been your biggest fan and has given you the most support?
My parents have supported me from the beginning and made sure I understood you have to work your hardest if you want to be set apart.

What other skills or talents do you have that other people may not know about you?
I found ballet pretty early in my life, before I really had time to see what my other talents were, so I don't really know. I am a pretty good student of math and physical sciences.

Are there any setbacks that you have overcome which have challenged you to be a better artist?
When I was 13 I broke my left ankle onstage and only had 6 weeks to recover before I had to perform again and I feel that it taught me a lot about patience and how to approach recoveries. It also forced me to slow down on my flash and pay more attention to the technique under the tricks. This experience made me a much better overall dancer.

What qualities do you believe are your biggest strengths?
It's very hard for me to judge my own strengths since whenever I see myself dancing, I only see what I?m doing wrong. I guess that characteristic could be considered a strength as it makes me work hard to improve what I don?t like about my performances.

What are your dreams/goals in life?
My current dream is just to get into a company and have the opportunity to perform some of the classics. I'll continue to set new goals as I achieve old ones.

What are your plans after high school?
My plans after high school are to perform with a major ballet company.
